40 years with the Spiral plating

The Spiral method was created in the 1970s by Dr. Ed Campbell of the FDA to automate the routine work of bacterial enumeration. With François Jalenques, his friend and founder of interscience, they promoted together what became a widely used method in labs.

A scientific friendship

In the early 1970s, Dr. Ed. Campbell, an FDA (Food & Drug Administration) researcher, designed the Spiral method to automate the laborious work of bacterial enumeration. He collaborated with François Jalenques, founder of INTERSCIENCE, and in 1992 patented together an updated version of the method.
Since then, Spiral automatic platers are considered as references in compliance with ISO 7218, ISO 4833-2, FDA-BAM and AOAC 977.27 standards.

What is the Spiral method?

The Spiral method, validated ISO 4833-2 and ISO 7218, allows the automatic plating of the sample with successive dilutions on 1 Petri dish.


40 Years of Experience

The sample is deposited on the surface of a rotating petri dish by a precise measuring micro-pump, according to a logarithmically decreasing Archimedes spiral from the center of the dish to its periphery.

According to the setting, the plating corresponds to 3 or 4 dilutions compared to the traditional method. The volume is calibrated and known at every point of the Petri dish. After incubation, the colonies appear as a spiral trace on the dish.
